SOCIAL MEDIA REVOLUTIONIZES AFRICAN BEAUTY INDUSTRY
Clan of Beauty Bloggers, YouTube Vloggers and Instagram Influencers Changing the Way African Women View Beauty and Engage with Brands
Lagos, Nigeria (January 17, 2014) – Next week, over 50,000 African tech and new media enthusiasts will converge on the continent’s most populous city, Lagos. Young African women like Jackie Aina who is known on YouTube as LilPumpkinPie05 will join a clan of African beauty bloggers, vloggers and influencers at this year’s event. Jackie will be participating on a panel discussing future trends in the Nigerian beauty industry with Joyce Jacob (@JoyceJacob_JJB), a celebrity makeup artist for Nigeria’s largest pop stars; Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi (@GbemiOO), a radio broadcaster and media consultant; and beauty bloggers Ezinne Alfa (@BeautyinLagos) and Chidimma Umeh (@ThatIgboChick). Bukky Kinoshi, Co-Founder of My Makeup & Co. (@MyMakeupNG), a young, beauty company that is introducing edgy and cool makeup brands to Nigerian consumers organized this year’s panel. These beauty influencers are responsible for fueling high demand for upmarket beauty products to Nigerian consumers.
The goal of this discussion is to empower Nigerian women by discussing how we can connect our current and future beauty ideals to our heritage as African women. We will also highlight current misconceptions around “beauty” in Nigeria and the Diaspora. Lastly, we will explore how we as content curators can determine trends on social media while incorporating tradition and culture.
